I get questions and commentary on this ALL THE TIME. In fact, almost any time I post a photo with multiple colors in it, the two main sentiments are, “How do you keep that from bleeding?” and, more annoyingly, “That’s gonna look great till she washes it.” There are actually a lot of simple solutions for this. First off, though, it should be noted that I also use color placement to my advantage, so bleeding is often either a non-issue, or is sometimes even desired to create a greater range of colors. However, that’s a subject for another article, so I won’t go into that here. So probably the most important factor with regards to bleeding is water rinsing temperature. Cold water closes the cuticle and traps nearly all the color molecules, preventing their escape. Hot water, conversely, opens the cuticle and lets a huge proportion of the color you just applied go all over the other colors and right down the drain. So, hot water is your enemy here. You will also want to make sure your clients continue to use cold water at home for maximum color separation and longevity, so it’s important to emphasize this as part of their care routine. And no need for cold showers, either; clip the hair up when showering/bathing, and wash it separately leaning over the tub so that only the scalp has to endure the frigidity. I also avoid shampooing after rinsing the color out. I prefer to give the majority of my color clients at least a 24 hour time frame before they can shampoo their hair; it seems to help the color set up better. Otherwise, the lathering and detergents just end up dislodging a lot of the color molecules, and they can end up stuck in other parts of the hair where you don’t want them. So, skip the shampoo on this service. If you’ve got color you’re really nervous about, find a good dry shampoo to retail to your clients for them to keep on hand. Otherwise, give them a sulfate free shampoo to minimize lathering and bleeding, and to maximize longevity and brightness. However, conditioner is okay, and recommended after a color service. Speaking of conditioner, it is also great to use as a color blocker. For instance, if there is hair that I want to stay relatively blonde near some brighter colors, then I will coat the blonde with conditioner during the coloring process, and then it can act as a protective barrier against the color when I rinse. There may still be some slight bleeding onto the blonde once the client starts shampooing at home, but it won’t be near the magnitude of what it would be with the actual dye still on the hair. This was what I used on Haley's blonde hair in the photo above. Occasionally, I may also rinse separately. This tends to consist of selectively removing foils, darkest colors first, and rinsing those before I move on to lighter pieces. I don’t do this often, however, simply due to my color placement strategies; it tends to be unnecessary. It’s also not always practical for your clients to do at home, either, unless there are only 2-3 very large sections and color mixing would be catastrophic. And honestly, I don’t consider bleeding catastrophic, because again, color placement eliminates this issue. But I also tend to hold the philosophy that the evolution and natural changes in the appearance of things is actually kind of cool. I let my clients know that sometimes, their hair will morph or change with each shampoo – and that’s good! It stays interesting, and it’s like getting a new or different color a couple times a week. Keep in mind, however, that agreement with this mindset is probably more likely among a rainbow clientele that changes their color often anyway; standard color clients may not be as impressed or pleased with it. My final strategy if I am feeling desperate or really worried is to let the color dry out on the hair. Yes, dry out. I will put them under the dryer and let all the moisture get sucked out until the color is no longer wet. When rinsing in this situation, you’ll notice that the water is almost completely clear. I discovered this on accident, but to be honest, rarely feel a need to use it. I am also not 100% clear on what effects that may have on the color itself with regards to longevity and other factors, so I would only use this strategy as a last resort. If you are a color educator for a particular brand, however, and you know whether this makes a difference on your color line(s), feel free to help us out in the comments. So that’s how I minimize bleeding. If you have any questions or comments, drop them in the comments below! Practice some of these strategies yourself on <<<<<<this rainbow wig

Hi ! I normally color my own hair a bunch of different colors often and have the issue with the bleeding . I know now from your post thats the reason is bc i use warm water . But the thing is , i have 4c hair texture . So my hair knots up really easily under cold water and can be really hair to detangle . What do you suggest in this case ?

Hi ya - I am struggling to find a solution to my question - I have used Knight and Wilson Conditioning magenta dye and love the vibrancy of it - however it comes with a massive flaw - when it rains (let’s face it i am in the UK so it’s pretty much always raining) the dye wont just bleed; it runs - like a tsunami down my face in epic streaks of bright pink!

Hiya, Some great ideas here :) Quick question though, I've got the beginning of an undercut style (hair was too short so building to a proper undercut) and want to keep the shorter back and sides a darker colour and dye the top bleach blonde (ready to then go crazy with he pastels)- so picking up on the bit about using conditioner as a colour blocker- would this work to coat the darker bits to stop the bleach running or would the bleach be too strong? :) xXx

THANK YOU!! I've got bright red hair with black peek a boo's and I have asked my stylist how to keep the color from bleeding, and her only suggestion "don't get it wet". Well that was entirely impossible 100% of the time. I went to a water park with my kids and I looked like a bleeding whale with my hair color running all over me. Not pretty. So I'm going to try the dry shampoo & maybe a high end leave in conditioner to try to help me keep the color from fading and maybe if I have to get in the water do an ice cold rinse first to try to shut down the bleeding.

Hi I've dyed a chunck of my hair with Violette Crazy Crazy which has gone a lovely blue colour as I've done it without bleach. The problem I've got is that the colour is rubbing off on the top layer which I choose not to colour. As this has blonde streaks in it, it has turned an unwanted green shade. Any tips on how to remove it? I already separate my hair when washing and drying it so the colour is transferring when dry

I work with Aveda color and drying the color on the hair is probably not a great idea with Aveda, since our hair color has essential oils and heated oil fries. Thank you for this post, it confirmed a lot for me that I wasn't ready to learn with trial and error 😊

You'll have to do both in a two-step process. Touch up your red, wash out dry, then re highlight just the root area

Thank you so much for this informative article ... I have only my roots colored and the rest of my hair is much lighter but every month I get a different shade after just having my roots done due to bleeding ... my stylist says she doesn't understand why ... I kept saying it had to be during the wash... although she uses conditioner to block she only does the bottom stating if closer to the scalp it'll drag the color down??? Anyway just got it done yesterday and I'm aggravated ... yet again another shade.. wish I had read your article before then.. any good toner you can suggest ?

Hi. You are amazing. My black did it again & bled into my platinum band. I just got it looking good again. I use OLAPLEX which allows lightening the already lightened without damaging. It's an amazing product. I'm tired of the black leeching into the blonde. It's now a koolaid purple. How can I prevent it. I read all above. I used cholesterol & plastic wrap to keep it as clean as possible. I rinsed separately my hairdresser used warmer & I knew better. 1 night of sweating, at that great age of sweats, it's back to purple. My hairdresser does this on the side & I think she doesn't stay up on a lot to keep it fresh. I do my blonding since I'm not at a real stylist bowl I literally backed up to the tub like a table to let her rinse. What can I do?

Hi just dyed my hair punky colour rose red a couple days ago. Which I'm regretting now because we're getting a heat wave. It's the perfect colour but every time I go for a walk or clean my house even the smallest amount of sweat makes the colour run down the back of my neck ! So embarrassing. Is there anyway to make something like punky colour permanent? Like I was thinking buying a normal permanent red and buying flamingo pink punky and mixing the two and try to recreate the colour I have now. But mixing stuff like that has me nervous! Any advice? As much fun as the rose red is, I'm thinking I might just need to stick to a permanent box dye to save myself the embarrassment and mess. Wish there was permanent pretty colours !!

Hi, sorry to bother anyone but I have a question. My mom who is professional hair stylist dyed my ends purple a couple of days ago. I gave it a couple more days to set and when I went to take a shower I made sure to use a sulfate free shampoo/conditioner and use one spherically for colour treated hair. But as soon as I put it in all the purple hair dye came out. I also wasn't using hot water. Although now the purple is much more visible on my hair than before. I'm concerned of whether or not all the hair dye got washed out or it's just lighter now?

i have a little tidbit of info that saved me during a color emergency!! I dyed my hair with splat and it also dyed my scalp and my forehead (unlike manic panic). I tried everything to get it out to no avail. I talked to a friend who does hair at a salon in New York and she told me that cigarette ashes would do the trick. So I got a washcloth, saturated in water, touched it to the ashes and began to wipe the areas that were dyed. Like magic, they lifted. Just though it was worth sharing...

I use a hair color rinse... Spun Sand on my gray/white hair. But within 2 or 3 days, the nape area gets very red. Is it from the rinse itself or possibly a reaction with my body... like too much iron or other minersls? Or, a reaction to my meds. But why knly the nape area?

Sounds like a color reaction to me. Been there, survived that! Be very cautious, as it could be a PPD reaction. Starts minimally, progresses each color. Eventually, you could have a severe reaction, which causes EXTREME swelling (Google inage search PPD allergy).... and could cause a fatal reaction if continued. I reccomend looking for a PPD free dye/toner. If you aren't a professional, Sally's offers a pretty good line from Ion. Good luck!

I have a lot of blonde still in my hair & I saturated strips of it with conditioner & wrapped it with plastic wrap then colored the rest of my hair a chocolate cherry. When it's time for me to rinse my hair when should I remove the plastic from the blonde strips & prevent the color from bleeding onto the blonde?

I would bleach it all just light enough for the purple to take, if you don’t mind a rosy purple, orange/yellow is ok. for most dark purples, all reds and oranges you want the hair to be at least orange if not yellow. most yellows and greens are ok at the pale yellow stage, and for blue, silver, and pastels you want it as light is possible. Now dye your colored section, protecting the blonde parts with conditioner, cholesterol, or petroleum jelly and then wrapping in plastic wrap. Put the dye on dry hair for maximum absorption. Leave on for 45 minutes, keep moist by use of plastic wrap, wrap a towel abound your head to trap in heat. Sit in the sun or near a heater for really bright color. Rinse with cold water, don’t take out the plastic protecting the blonde hair til the color stops running, if the plastic falls off it’s okay. Once the water is clear, cleanse the blonde parts with shampoo if needed to remove the rest of the petroleum jelly or cholesterol (shouldn’t be necessary if you used conditioner). Conditioner would be my last choice as a color barrier. Then using either 10 or 20 vol. and bleach, bleach the blonde parts to the desired lightness, thus removing any stray color. Rinse again with cold water, no shampoo (you just bleached your hair, think about that for a second, it’s clean already) and finish with conditioner, use a really nice conditioner or even a hair treatment on the blonde bits. purple or lilac pigment corrector can be added to the conditioning treatment, leave on for 10 minutes, this will tone the blonde parts and minimizes brassyness. Use this conditioner/color corrector combo once a week and always wash with cold water. Limit shampoo to only when needed (twice a week) condition every time you shower. Conditioner also cleanses the hair.

Protect your skin prior to coloring with petroleum jelly, and sleep with it wrapped with a silk scarf afterward to protect your color from bleeding onto your skin. It should help some. You could also "seal" the color by using a "clear" 00 color immediately after coloring and rinsing the green. I reccomend drying hair first, and using the 00 liberally to ensure maximum coverage. This will also help protect the color from fading or bleeding. Its not perfect, it is a semi-permanent option. You could also re-seal about 2-3 weeks later, depending on how often you shampoo. The less you wash, the longer it lasts.

Hello I have learned so much from reading this article and am hoping someone could help me with a specific plan I have I mind.. So I have red hair and really want to put some bleach blonde streaks or highlights into it but am using the boxed hair dye from the local supermarket and was wondering the best way to approach either one and for my end result to have the least amount of bleeding. Both streaks and highlights (using the cap provided) are an option at this time and really hope I can get the best advice for both ways to hopefully come to a final decision. Thank you so much in advance and can't wait to hear and learn the right way to make this approach:)

I have lifted my dark brown hair to a light medium blonde all over, except for about a half inch at the root..... I'm going to dye it all a dark green/jade color, and then do a shadow root/melt with a dark brown... I tried this once with pink instead of green and the brown bled and made the pink a dark red.... How do I avoid this with the green? Will just washing in cold water work?

Hello, I have a question, ok so I've been trying to dye my hair from my roots to about half way(middle of hair)using atomic turquoise, then from the middle to the ends using hot hot pink I know where the two colors meet it blends to purple which is fine so it should be turquoise to purple to pink but after I rinse using cold water an NO shampoo the bottom half (supposed to be pink)keeps turning purple how do I stop this from happening?

Thanks for this! I recently had my hair done ombré red, purple, blue and my stylist didn’t warn me about bleeding. It’s been a bit over 2 weeks and I’ve since washed my hair twice (with expensive safe color shampoo and conditioner)… and it’s now bled each time so that the purple looks brownish and the blue looks to have disappeared.Since I wasn’t warned or prepared to take extra precautions I’m wondering if it’s okay to contact the stylist to ask her to fix it if possible. As a stylist would you understand if this were asked of you? Really not sure what’s considered okay? 😔
